"It is said that 70% of the human brain's capacity is left unused. It is thought that the amazing powers humans possess are hidden within these parts. That unused 70% of the brain is also known as... Night Head."

NIGHT HEAD, starring Etsushi Toyokawa and Takeda Shinji, is a drama with an original story about 2 brothers with supernatural powers escaping from a research institute after being locked up for 15 years, since they were kids.

The big brother, Naoto (Etsushi Toyokawa), possess psychokinetic powers. Based on his increasing emotions, Naoto can break glasses, move things and can even cause head pains and severe nose-bleed in humans.

The little brother, Naoya (Takeda Shinji), possess mind-reading and telepathic powers. As soon as he makes body contact with someone, he'd immediately see the person's mind and/or past, and sometimes what's about to happen to the person in the future.

NIGHT HEAD is FujiTV drama aired from October 1992 to March 1993 for a total 21 episodes, with 23 minutes duration for each episode. The story continued with a wide-screen movie sequel showed in 1994. The story was later adapted to manga and TV anime series titled NIGHT HEAD GENESIS in 2006.

It's the first time I heard there's an anime series adapted from a TV drama, usually it's the other way around.

Due to my gaining interest in Takeda Shinji recently (hehe...), I had been checking his drama database and looked for interesting ones and I found this. Supernatural power stories always intrigued me. The first supernatural power story I read, was the popular manga, MAI... I read that when I was a kid, and it left me such a deep impression. Then, I remember I've watched this movie starring Yada Akiko and Ito Hideaki where Yada Akiko possess pyrokinetic powers, she burns things when she's angry. For Japanese stuff, I think that's all I've seen? I've seen alot of Hollywood movies that features characters with supernatural powers, of course. The recent one being the movie, PUSH, which was pretty good, imo.

NIGHT HEAD immediately opened with a scene where the Kirihara brothers escaped from the research institute by a car. Their background will be shown later in flashbacks. Naoto and Naoya stopped by at a bar. There were a few jerks in the bar, and in this bar, Naoto showed what his capable of. He was very raged and broke many glasses and cause few people there got nose-bleed. In the middle of the chaos, someone touched Naoya and Naoya got hysterical when he saw that person is killing someone.

Naoto and Naoya still don't know how to control their powers, they are still amateurs in this. So in every episode, we have to see them release their powers uncontrollably and got panicked, esp. Naoya. Naoto has more ability in controlling his own power, but Naoya couldn't at all. Plus he is easily scared and too much dependable to his brother. His constant "NII-SAN!!" kinda bother me. Feel like saying, Be a man will ya! XD   It does make me wonder though, what did they do in the research institute for 15 years, if they still can't control their powers by now?

However, their characters gets better as the story progresses. Naoya becomes stronger and sometimes (really just few times though) he can control his own power, and use it on his own will, not just because someone touch him.

In each episode, they met strange happenings and sometimes other people with supernatural powers just like them. My favorites were: the one where Naoto secretly wished he has a peaceful, happy marriage life and a woman who can hear his wish made it come true and created that world for him. In that world(dream?), Naoto is happily married with that woman and works as a salaryman, but his brother, Naoya is nowhere to be found. The woman said it was because Naoto secretly wish Naoya is gone and doesn't trouble him anymore. Also, the one where they met a girl with powers exactly like Naoya, and although she suffered and felt miserable with this unwanted power, in the end she tried to face it and use her power smartly, she did it, but she used it too much that it made her collapsed.

Besides the case-by-case stories, of course, there's the big plot with hints spread here and there in each eps. There's a girl named Shoko, a highschool girl, who has the ability to see the future ahead. Right after the Kirihara brothers escaped, Shoko disappeared from this world. Her last words before she disappeared, to her friend was "Two brothers will appear. They will have a large role in the "UPHEAVAL" that will come soon,". In something like a ghost form, Shoko appeared before the brothers from time to time to give them guidance... I dunno, she's like a prophet or something? I'm not even sure if she's real or she's only in the brothers' imagination.

Besides the research institute, there's this organization called ARK, which was established by supernatural-powered people and to organize these kind of people, and they had been trying to find the two brothers because they will have a large role in the "upheaval" as Shoko said.

There was also the mystery whether or not Naoto and Naoya's childhood memories were only made-up, fake or not. Because when they went to their house, there's nothing but a land, but according to the old woman there, the land had always been empty since she was born. Their parents are nowhere to be found. So they're wondering if their memories are fake. And where has their real memories gone to? This part really got me interested. Made-up memories. But in the end Shoko said to them, that actually people has the ability to make what they wish for to become a reality, but not many people know that and or not many people want that kind of ability. The fact their house and their parents were gone, is because that's what they have wished for, unconciously.

Well, anyway, there are many puzzling answers in this drama, esp. everything Shoko says are always circling and puzzling. And some questions are kept unanswered in the end, as well. Of course, there's the movie sequel. Too bad I cannot find the raw for the movie XD

NIGHT HEAD has a very good story material, idea and theories. This drama is very potential to be awesome. Maybe that's what kept me wanting to watch more. Hanging on to that potential. However, there was something wrong with the characters' and story developments and this drama ended up being so-so, for me. Some eps were even boring. The brothers' characters were somehow boring.

This drama is gloomy, very very dark and gloomy. I think I only saw Naoya's smile in one episode, and that's when they got a medicine that can switch off their powers for a certain amount of time. And without the power, Naoya looked very, very happy and he could walk around the town freely as much as he want. Oh yeah, this is also the episode where Shinohara Ryoko guests, btw^^   Honto ni... there were no more casts I know besides the 2 leads and Shinohara, the others were totally unfamiliar for me XD   Of course there were few actors with small roles I'm familiar with, but not much.

With horror movie-like background musics, dark atmosphere, blood and certain liquids coming out from mouth (or sometimes head), not to mention the 90s atmosphere-directing-CG effects.... hmm, this drama really made me lose my appetite. I chose not to watch this while eating something XD

I kept wondering why I chose to continue this to the end. Perhaps, the expectation that it will get more interesting, or questions being answered. Well, some questions were answered, but many weren't too.

I think watching the 2006 anime would be better if you're intrigued in the story. From summaries and watching the first 2eps, the anime stick pretty close with the original drama. However, too bad my favorite episodes in the drama were not included in the anime =(

Takeda Shinji, I think he did a good job. I never seen him in a role that requires to show many emotions to the max, before, so it was refreshing to see him in a role like this. Although I can't say I like his character here. He was only 20 here, and I noticed he hasn't looked as kakkoii as he is now, yet, in this drama =P   But... I prefer Takeda Shinji in the happy-go-lucky, fun-loving guy role, that's what he's best at. (perhaps, because he is like that in real life too^^)

Is there any other Japanese drama or movie out there that centers around characters with supernatural powers? Pls let me know!^^

OF COURSE, since I saw him as Hirofumi, the kind and gentle papa and husband, lol.

I neither like nor hate him before. Even after 3 or 4 eps of Hirofumi, I still didn't think he was great... or maybe I was just in denial, haha... but he kinda grown on me =P

I hated his character in Suna too. But since I saw an interview with him and Nakai before, I already knew he's quite fun and Nakai get along with him too.

Wow, NIGHT HEAD on your local TV?? I thought this is such a rare drama.

Oh, I recommend it very much! He was only 17 but, it was such a different role than the roles he plays now and his acting was brilliant there^^

Hi, you probably don't know me but...

well I have been watching other stuff by the writer of Night Head and got curious what else he did and stumbled over the synopsis of this drama and the cast. It sounded like just my kind of thing but the age led me to believe it would be almost impossible to find outside of Japan. Then I remembered you're a big Takeda Shinji fan (don't ask, I just remember odd things ^^;) so I came here to see if you'd posted anything about this drama.

It appears you've seen it so... could you tell me where to find it or would you maybe share? That would be most awesome.

Thanks, I actually found it myself by now, didn't think it would be there because it's rather old.
Subs are really not an issue but thanks for mentioning it :D

Oh! Another jdrama that centers around characters with supernatural powers is Nanase Futatabi. I've only seen the 2008 renzoku but it was most excellent.

Hello,

I found your post, among several other results, while specifically Googling the Night Head TV live-action drama from 1992 (as opposed to the anime series), and there are a few things I wanted to let you know. First of all, among the results I found was also a post, on the LJ community rare_doramas, sharing all the episodes of this series. The direct link is here:

http://community.livejournal.com/rare_doramas/4907.html

I realize that my reply is actually kinda late given that you posted this in early February, but that community post was made earlier this week, on January 11th 2011. So if you are still searching for episodes, there it is.

As for the movie, if you want to see it so badly, CDJapan does carry the DVD. Just do a search for Night Head using the "All DVDs" option, and it will be on the very first page of results. Again, the direct link is this:

http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=PCBG-50210

They also carry the DVDs of the TV live-action series, apparently both individually and as a box set. I have been unable to find a download for the movie, but sites like AsiaTorrents.com might have it. I myself am not registered to it, because I only just found about it and their normal registration is closed (you need an invite). Perhaps you know of even better torrent sites where you could search for it. If you do find a download for it, please let me know. :)

Apparently, according to the japanese wiki site for Night Head, there exists a TV special titled "THE OTHER SIDE". I don't suppose you've ever heard of it or found a download for it?

Anyway, I hope the links I provided help you, if you haven't yet found episodes of this series. :)
